summary of position

The sheet metal brake operator is responsible for folding sheet metal parts using a hydraulic press brake.

Essential functions

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Read and understand engineering drawings and instructions.
  • Read and understand bills of material.
  • Machine set up.
  • Fold parts to drawing specifications.
  • Place parts on pallets after completion.
  • Use a caliper measuring to the nearest thousandth.
  • Distinguish between different gauges and types of materials.
  • Accurately measure blank size.
  • Set machine based on job technical specifications.
  • Operate machine safely.
  • Check work and monitor quality.
  • Distinguish between brake dies and punches.
  • Calibrate machine if necessary.
  • Prioritize work schedule.
  • Contribute to team effort by working with others and accomplishing related functions as needed.
  • Complete any task as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
  • Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and company procedures.
  • Work overtime as necessary.
  • Attend work as required.
  • Arrive for work on time.
  • Charge time accurately in time and attendance system on the computer to ensure accurate labor distribution and payroll.
  • Follow manufacturing instructions, work independently without constant supervision, be self-motivated, and complete job assignments on time.
  • Care for tools and equipment. Advise maintenance of equipment that is not working correctly.
  • Clean work area as required.

Desired qualifications

Education & Experience: A high school level of education is preferred for this position to continue upward advancement in the Company. The employee must be able to understand directions from superiors. Previous experiences operating machinery in metal fabrication preferred.

Skills: Effective communications skills, good listening skills, ability to read and comprehend drawings and written instructions, basic mathematical skills, ability to control operations of equipment or system, monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals or organization to make improvements or take corrective action, good people skills to work in teams with others in the organization.

Certificates, Licenses, or training: on-site training, forklift license (obtained on-site)

level/grade

1 – Beginning level brake operator meets minimal quality standards, needs more time to complete work than estimated for the job

2 – Proficient level brake operator meets quality standards, able to complete work within estimated hours for the job

3 – Proficient level brake operator meets quality standards, able to complete work in less time than estimated for the job

Interaction with others

Answers to Plant Manager. Must be able to accurately receive, understand and follow instructions from supervisor/lead. The employee must be able to work with all employees of the RAE team and show a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization. To accomplish this teamwork, the employee must get along well with coworkers and be willing to ask and answer questions as needed.

working environment

Work is performed in an industrial production area for a manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. The employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. They are exposed to extreme temperatures in both winter and summer—possible stress caused by the pressure of meeting deadlines and product quality standards. The noise level in the work environment is high in some areas. Seasonal variations in hours worked based on production demands.

Other Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to lift objects with a minimum of 50 lbs frequently. Requires grasping parts from the worktable and per drawing by flipping and/or spinning the part as needed. It also requires repetitive motion conditions with substantial wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Sustained use of eyesight for functions such as visual inspection, reading, measuring, and operating hand tools, along with the ability to see objects and detect motion at wide angles (peripheral vision) to maintain employee safety, ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e., safety glasses, hearing protection), ability to stand for long periods,
