summary of position

An expander uses high-pressure water or lubricant to shoot metal balls through the length of copper tubing of core assembly using expansion guns (alternately, mandrel expanders may be used). This process secures copper tube & fin with core assembly, making up the body of heat exchange coils.

Essential functions

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Read and understand engineering drawings and instructions.
  • Read and understand bills of material.
  • Read a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch.
  • Set up coil squarely on expander table (utilizing tape measure).
  • Expand tubes using the specified expander ball size.
  • Identify correct ball size according to schedule.
  • According to paperwork, determine whether the coil is a condenser (oil) or water coil (steam or water).
  • Expand coil using proper lubricant / expander table.
  • Dry out the coil with the air hose.
  • Operate crane and hoist safely.
  • Check work and ensure quality.
  • Contribute to team effort by working with others and accomplishing related functions as needed.
  • Complete any task as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
  • Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and company procedures.
  • Work overtime as necessary.
  • Attend work as required.
  • Arrive for work on time.
  • Charge time accurately in time and attendance system on the computer to ensure accurate labor distribution and payroll.
  • Follow manufacturing instructions, work independently without constant supervision, be self-motivated, and complete job assignments on time.
  • Care for tools and equipment. Advise maintenance of equipment that is not working properly.
  • Clean work area as required.

Desired qualifications

Education & Experience: A high school level of education is preferred for this position to continue upward advancement in the Company. The employee must be able to understand directions from superiors.

Skills: Effective communications skills, good listening skills, ability to read and comprehend drawings and written instructions, basic mathematical skills, including the ability to read a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch, ability to control operations of equipment or system, monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals or organization to make improvements or take corrective action, good people skills to work in teams with others in the organization.

1 – Beginning level expander meets minimal quality standards, needs more time to complete work than estimated for the job

2 – Proficient level expander meets quality standards, able to complete work within estimated hours for the job

3 – Proficient level expander meets quality standards, able to complete work in less time than estimated for the job

Interaction with others

Answers to Coil Shop Supervisor. Must be able to accurately receive, understand & follow instructions from supervisor/lead. The employee must be able to work with all employees of the RAE team and show a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization. To accomplish this teamwork, the employee must get along well with coworkers and ask and answer questions as needed.

working environment

Work is performed in an industrial production area for a manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. The employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles and exposed to mineral spirits. The noise level in the work environment is high in some areas. Exposed to extreme temperatures in both winter and summer. Possible stress caused by the pressure of meeting deadlines and product quality standards and seasonal variations in hours worked based on production demands.

Other Physical Requirements: Sustained use of eyesight for functions such as visual inspection, reading, measuring, and operating hand tools, along with the ability to see objects and detect motion at wide angles (peripheral vision) to maintain employee safety, ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e., safety glasses, hearing protection), hand-eye coordination, frequent use of foot/feet to operate foot pedal for expanding gun.
